Wellinger soars to silver!

The German ski jumpers impressed at the World Championships in Trondheim. Andreas Wellinger secured the first medal for the DSV Eagles, landing himself a silver medal!

Andreas Wellinger has surprisingly won the silver medal at the Ski Jumping World Championships in Trondheim. On the normal hill, the German athlete delivered jumps of 106.5 m (133.9 points) and 104.5 m (129.3 points).

The victory went to Norwegian Marius Lindvik, while Austrian Jan Hörl took third place.

Wellinger shares his emotional journey

Wellinger, the Olympic champion from 2018, showed visible relief after his two jumps. For the DSV Eagles, it was their first World Championship medal in the men's category.

"The last two months have been really tough for us. We had to fight hard. I am very happy with the result," Wellinger told Eurosport.

He later reflected on the challenges he faced over the past eight weeks, stating, "The last eight weeks have been quite rough. We fought our way out and performed right from the first jump. I really delivered strong competition jumps. In the end, it was close; I won silver, not lost gold."

Geiger’s commendable placement

Karl Geiger, who has struggled with form recently, rounded off a good team result for Germany by placing fourth with jumps of 105.5 m and 102 m.

"It wasn't perfect in the finals; I thought too much about the result. I went all in and stuck to my approach," Geiger commented.

Philipp Raimund could not replicate his good training performances and finished in 15th place. Pius Paschke narrowly made it into the second round but did not improve, finishing in 30th place.

Experts in awe of Wellinger

Wellinger dazzled experts with his first jump: "It’s unbelievable what they lay down here," exclaimed a thrilled ZDF commentator Stefan Bier on TV. Former ski jumper Severin Freund was also highly impressed.

"He just managed to get that on the edge," Freund remarked about the jump under challenging wind conditions. Especially encouraging was the fact that Wellinger received great scores from the judges.

"Here comes a 20! Wow, that holds rarity value," Freund praised, adding, "For the jumpers' heart, this is vital."

Next week in Trondheim, the men's events will include the mixed competition, team competition, and the decision on the large hill.
