Thomas Thurnbichler Fumed Over Polish Skier's Jump: "What Was That?!"
Originally published in Przegląd Sportowy on December 15, 2024
Thomas Thurnbichler was visibly frustrated while discussing the scores awarded to Jakub Wolny during the Saturday competition, noting that the judges had once again shown inconsistency over the weekend in Titisee-Neustadt.
The points Wolny earned during the competition showcased his potential. Throughout the weekend, he performed well, achieving jumps of 131 meters and 130.5 meters, landing him in 22nd place. However, his placement could have been notably better had he received fair scores for style. Wolny completed his second jump correctly but received low scores from the judges: 17; 16.5; 17.5; 18; 18 points, leading to a total score of only 52.5 points after discarding the extreme scores.
Thurnbichler did not hold back in expressing his disbelief at a score of 16.5 given to Wolny's jump. In a conversation with Jakub Balcerski from Sport.pl, he remarked, "This is outrageous. It’s obviously an '18'. Just look at the discrepancy. What was that?!"
This is not the first time that the judges have made questionable decisions. On Saturday, they also awarded unfair scores to Paweł Wąsek. Such occurrences have been a common theme over the years, with jury scores often varying dramatically and deviating from FIS regulations. It frequently appears that athletes are judged not for the actual performance but rather for their names or past achievements.
