During the first training session before the World Cup qualifiers in Wisła, Polish ski jumper Paweł Wąsek showed his best performance among the Poles, placing ninth. The situation for the rest of the Polish jumpers was not as favorable. This season marked the return of Piotr Żyła to competition, who made his first jump of the season. The training ended unfortunately for 19-year-old Jason Colby, who fell and suffered a broken collarbone, as reported by Interia Sport. The incident looked very dangerous.
"Initially, it seemed that we wouldn’t see any jumps on Friday due to very strong winds and incoming snow. However, Borek Sedlak, the assistant director of the World Cup, reassured us, stating that 'The conditions are better than we thought (still on the edge), according to the weather forecast.' First training started on schedule.
As hosts, the Poles were able to field nine jumpers. Spectators' eyes were particularly on Piotr Żyła, a three-time world champion who had missed the first two weekends of the World Cup due to an injury. He returned and performed decently, landing at 125 m. Kacper Juroszek landed three meters back at 122 m, while Andrzej Stękała achieved 115 m. Among the additional jumpers, Maciej Kot struggled the most with a poor landing at 105 m.
Among those already competing this season, Jakub Wolny jumped first, reaching 122 m, a distance matched by Kamil Stoch. Dawid Kubacki landed at two meters shorter while Aleksander Zniszczoł experienced difficulties, landing at 113 m. Paweł Wąsek stood out as the best of the Poles in the first training session, achieving a distance of 129.5 m.
Conditions were lottery-like, leading to strong winds impacting some jumpers significantly. Ukrainian Jewhen Marusiak soared to 137.5 m, while Jason Colby unfortunately encountered a painful fall. "As we learned, the teenager from the USA was transported to the hospital where he received his first diagnosis of a broken collarbone, which will certainly lead to a longer recovery period away from jumping," Interia reported. The first training session winner was Jan Hoerl with a distance of 133 m.
Results of Polish jumpers in the first training session in Wisła:
- 9th Paweł Wąsek (129.5 m)
- 24th Kamil Stoch (122 m)
- 25th Dawid Kubacki (120 m)
- 30th Piotr Żyła (125 m)
- 47th Kacper Juroszek (122 m)
- 60th Andrzej Stękała (115 m)
- 61st Maciej Kot (105 m)
