Surprising Scenes at the Ski Jumping World Championship: We Didn't Expect This

It seemed that the scenes from two years ago at the World Championships in Planica would not repeat. Unfortunately, in Trondheim, during the ski jumping competitions, the stands are consistently empty.

Empty Stands at the Ski Jumping World Championships

Just before the start of the World Championships in Trondheim, the organizers boasted that they had sold 200,000 tickets. It seemed that there would be no repeat of the situation in Planica two years ago, where Slovenes jacked up ticket prices, leaving the stands empty.

Unfortunately, while the skiing and Nordic combined competitions attracted crowds at the Granåsen Arena, the ski jumping events are only followed by a handful of fans each day. The contrast is truly staggering.

This was the case during Friday's individual competition for women, as well as the team event, in which the host representatives celebrated victory. Even fewer fans attended the qualifications, which started only at 8:30 PM. Despite the small crowd, there were still some Polish accents to be found.

Thomas Thurnbichler commented: "These are qualifications, not the main competition. Besides, I guess most Norwegians are at the medal ceremony today. After all, they won quite a bit. It’s understandable. I think tomorrow the stadium will be full."

We will find out if that truly happens at 5 PM, when the individual competition is scheduled to start.
