Ski Stars Celebrate: Narvik Chosen to Host the 2029 Ski World Championships
In an exciting announcement by the FIS, Narvik, a charming town in Norway, has been granted the honor of hosting the Ski World Championships in 2029. Nestled north of the Arctic Circle, Narvik boasts a population of approximately 22,000 and has previously hosted five World Cup events, showcasing its capacity for high-caliber competitions.
Norwegian ski luminaries, including Aleksander Aamodt Kilde and Kajsa Vickhoff Lie, have publicly expressed their enthusiasm about the decision. On her Instagram story, Vickhoff Lie proclaimed, "Goosebumps! The World Championships are coming to Norway!"
Upcoming Championship Locations
During the same FIS Council meeting, the Val Gardena region in South Tyrol, Italy, was selected to host the 2031 Alpine Ski World Championships, while Soldeu in Andorra missed out on this opportunity.
Saalbach-Hinterglemm in Austria is set to host the Alpine World Championships next year, followed by Crans-Montana in Switzerland two years later.
In a notable decision, the FIS has also awarded the Snowboard, Freestyle, and Freeski World Championships in 2029 to Zhangjiakou, China. Additionally, the Ski Flying World Championships will take place in Planica, Slovenia, in 2028.
Concerns for Lahti
Meanwhile, Lahti's bid to host the Nordic Skiing World Championships faced hurdles as it did not fully meet the necessary criteria for formal selection. This development has opened a 30-day window for Finnish officials to address the FIS's feedback regarding their application.
