Ski-VM: Silje Opseth Opens Up About Weight Problems: Now a World Champion Reveals Personal Issues to NRK

In February, Silje Opseth shared her struggles with weight issues as a ski jumper. Now, fellow competitor Katharina Schmid has also opened up about similar challenges in front of NRK during the Ski World Championships in Trondheim.

Katharina, a German jumper with several championship titles, expressed her shared feelings regarding body weight in the sport, stating:

“Yes. I have felt the same. I am quite small, so I understand if it can be challenging to comprehend. But yes, I know that feeling, and it is tough.”

She pointed out that even though she may be heavier, she is determined to compete at high levels and is working on a healthy approach to maintain her weight.

The conversation about weight in sports, particularly among women in ski jumping, has been brought to the forefront thanks to Opseth and Schmid's stories. Eva Pinkelnig, another seasoned jumper, supports Opseth’s openness, emphasizing the need for honesty in women’s sports:

"It’s really good that she talks openly about it. We need more transparency. There is too much falsity everywhere, and athletes must be allowed to express their struggles."

Pinkelnig believes that by being open about their challenges, female athletes can inspire younger generations facing similar obstacles, demonstrating that success is possible despite personal battles.

NRK reached out to the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) regarding Opseth’s suggestions to change BMI regulations and address weight issues in ski jumping. FIS responded, emphasizing that weight considerations are crucial for performance, yet every athlete should find the balance that suits them best.

Schmid concluded:

"It is part of the sport we are in. Each individual must decide what is best for them."

This dialogue about body image and its impact on athletes today reflects ongoing challenges and changes in attitudes within the sport, with both Opseth and Schmid paving the way for more candid conversations about personal issues in ski jumping.
