Sensation: Ski Jumping Jewel Stuns Everyone

The new Polish champion is not Kamil Stoch, Dawid Kubacki, or Piotr Zyla, but rather Klemens Joniak. The 19-year-old astonished the entire ski jumping nation and can hardly believe his sensational success in Zakopane.

With such an unexpected coup, no one was really prepared, least of all Klemens Joniak himself.

The young ski jumper, at just 19 years of age, shocked his national competition and can now call himself the "Polish Champion." "A gigantic sensation," declared the portal Gazeta, while Onet referred to him as a "sensational new Polish champion."

Ski Jumping: Youngster Stuns Poland's Stars

Joniak showcased the best jumps of the day with distances of 104 and 102.5 meters, leaving his renowned compatriots with a gap of 8.5 points. This is a real shockwave considering that world-class jumpers like Dawid Kubacki and Piotr Zyla finished behind him. Kubacki claimed the world championship title in 2019 and won the tournament in 2021, while Zyla owns two world titles (2021 and 2023).

Accordingly, the young star could hardly grasp his happiness following his monumental win. "I wonder how this could happen," he stated perplexed during the media rounds. Although he had felt that his jumps were improving recently, he did not expect such a success.

Before the finals, he felt pressured but managed to turn it into energy. The 19-year-old had never competed in the World Cup and has not yet achieved a top-20 result in the second-tier COC. He collected some COC points recently in Klingenthal, finishing 27th and 29th.

Stöckl Welcomes New Hope: Veterans in Trouble

For Polish ski jumping, Joniak's coup signifies an important turning point. In recent years, success was primarily from the over-30 generation consisting of Kamil Stoch, Dawid Kubacki, and Piotr Zyla, while younger talents had underperformed. Poland’s new sports director Alexander Stöckl welcomes the fresh air in the team.

"He has jumped well in recent days and showed two good jumps at the championships. It’s great to see our young jumpers challenging the team," he explained to the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet.

However, there remains a big question mark about Joniak's performance capability in international competitions. The truth is that Poland's top star, Kamil Stoch, had to sit out due to an injury suffered in the fall, Zyla underwent surgery in the summer and started with a training deficit, while Kubacki has been missing his top form from the winter of 2022/23.

"I Strive to Become the Best Ski Jumper"

The 34-year-old family man’s life changed after his wife was in life-threatening condition due to heart problems in March 2023. Nevertheless, this should not diminish Joniak's performance, who also defeated the recently crowned Summer Grand Prix overall winner, Pawel Wasek.

Looking ahead to the upcoming World Cup winter, the Polish champion did not want to get too ahead of himself. "I have my goals for the season, but I want to keep them to myself," he kept his plans under wraps. The season begins on November 22 in Lillehammer, marking a debut in the World Cup for Joniak and potentially the start of a great international career. "I aspire to become the best ski jumper," he expressed his long-term ambitions.
