Ski Jumping: Kasai Breaks Insane Record – Could Qualify for the World Championships?
Originally published in SPORT1 on February 16, 2025
Noriaki Kasai has once again made ski jumping history. Competing at his home event in Sapporo, the 52-year-old extended his record by starting his 579th World Cup competition. Kasai, who already holds records as the oldest participant, the oldest to score points, the oldest to stand on the podium, and the oldest winner, achieved a notable qualification despite initially missing the mark in his first attempt – eventually succeeding on his second jump.
Following his performance, strong results in the Continental Cup helped him secure a place in the top league. Now, speculation in Japan is growing over whether Kasai might be nominated for the upcoming Nordic Ski World Championships in Trondheim. If selected, this would be his 14th appearance at the Worlds, coming 36 years after his debut in 1988 in Sapporo.
