Schmitt Critically Views Changes in Ski Jumping Rules

Former world champion and Olympic gold medalist in ski jumping, Martin Schmitt, holds skepticism regarding the necessity of recent rule changes. He believes that these alterations could undermine the true spirit of the sport.

In particular, Schmitt questions the new penalty system where three points, rather than the previous two, will be deducted for a poorly executed telemark landing. He rhetorically asks whether it makes sense for a jump of 137 meters to be valued the same as a 129-meter jump with a nice telemark landing, suggesting that it could diminish the competitive nature of ski jumping.

Despite his concerns about the rules, Schmitt holds high hopes for German ski jumper Andreas Wellinger in the upcoming Four Hills Tournament. He perceives Wellinger as a serious contender, stating that he is a man to beat during major events, and he believes Wellinger is capable of achieving podium finishes this season.

Schmitt also expressed optimism for the overall performance of the German ski jumping team, which includes notable jumpers like Karl Geiger and Markus Eisenbichler, although he suggests it may be challenging for them to finish in the very top positions.
