Exciting changes are on the horizon for ski jumping as the International Ski Federation (FIS) has approved the construction of new ‘large hills’ that will bridge the gap between traditional large hills and the mammoth-sized ones. These hills will range from 150 to 184 meters in height (HS) and are poised to transform the sport in the coming years.
According to Czech sources, the inaugural large hill is set to be built in Harrachov, boasting dimensions of K-143 and HS162. This facility is expected to be ready for the 2025/26 season following a series of modern upgrades.
In addition, another large hill is under development in Ironwood, Michigan, USA. Sandro Pertile has already been in discussions with American officials to ensure that work on Copper Peak begins promptly. This renovation will occur in two phases: the first phase will adapt the hill for winter use, while the second phase will see plastic mats installed for summer training. The Ironwood hill is projected to measure K-161 and HS180.
Furthermore, ski jumps with a construction point between 135 and 164 meters will feature a scoring value of 1.6 points per meter, as outlined by FIS. The anticipation is building as the 2024/25 Winter Ski Jumping World Cup is set to commence on November 22 in Lillehammer, Norway.
