Recap of a Bizarre Situation: World Cup Rules Broken Again!

The Ski Jumping World Cup began with an incident involving a Norwegian judge who was supposed to oversee the event in Kuusamo. On Saturday, regulations regarding the nationality of officials were breached with five judges, leading to confusion among fans and commentators. The situation was repeated on Sunday, prompting an explanation from commentators on Eurosport regarding this unusual occurrence during the broadcast.

On Saturday, alarming news emerged from Kuusamo. One of the judges was involved in a minor car accident, which meant they could not reach the venue in time. Unfortunately, this forced the organizers to break the rules since no foreign judges were available as replacements. The absence of the Norwegian judge was compensated for by utilizing another Finnish official, and the competitions proceeded with this new setup.

Interestingly, the same situation repeated itself on Sunday. "You saw the jury composition, five judges, including two Finns, due to the absence of the Norwegian judge who was in a car accident and couldn’t make it," said Igor Błachut on Eurosport, explaining the surprising sight during the broadcast.

Thus, the judges on the Finnish hill for the qualifications were as follows: Wojciech Malina (Poland), Matt Laue (USA), Tiiu Ounila (Finland), Thomas Schubeck (Germany), and Pirjo Karjalainen (Finland).

This second violation of rules raises concerns since the rules state that each judge should be of different nationalities in World Cup events. After scores are submitted by the five appointed judges, the two extreme scores are discarded.
