Reacts strongly after several failed jumps in Ruka: – A proper parody
Expert Andreas Stjernen was critical of the Ruka organizers after Halvor Egner Granerud landed a poor 71.5 meters. The second round was stopped due to wind problems.
Granerud, who failed to qualify for the event the previous day, was looking to redeem himself on Sunday. However, his jump of 71.5 meters was 65 meters shorter than then leader Karl Geiger.
– It was a bit foggy with frost on the track. It didn’t slide very well. It felt like you were stuck a bit. This was just how the weekend was in Ruka, said a very disappointed Granerud to Viaplay.
Shortly after, Austrian Michael Hayböck also experienced a weak jump, managing only 70 meters, resulting in zero points.
– Now it’s a proper parody, said expert Andreas Stjernen.
Following the weak performances, the organizers made adjustments to the ramp.
– It’s somewhat expected to have inconsistencies with the wind, but when it also impacts the glide ... For a small pause to negatively affect the glide for some and to improve it for others, that’s when I think it becomes a parody, Stjernen continued.
After a brief pause, it was Johann André Forfang’s turn. The Tromsø native jumped to 96.5 meters, which also wouldn't keep him in contention for additional jumping that day.
– It’s incredibly frustrating. We’ll have to try again next weekend, Forfang said.
Following the weak lengths, the organizers made changes and moved the ramp higher. The remaining jumpers were able to complete the second round before the wind returned. After a delay, the organizers chose to cancel the rest of the competition, meaning the results from the first round stood. Thus, German Andreas Wellinger was declared the winner.
Marius Lindvik was the best Norwegian in ninth place with a jump of 137.5 meters. Robert Johansson finished twelfth with a jump of 128 meters. Kristoffer Eriksen Sundal had to settle for 27th place with a jump of 125 meters.
Sundal previously placed fourth on Saturday, where both he and Johansson were sharply critical of the organizers for choosing to hold the competition.
Wellinger won the event with a jump of 146.5 meters. Stefan Kraft (Austria) and Geiger (Germany) completed the podium.
Villumstad disqualified
Fredrik Villumstad was disqualified in the first round due to incorrect measurements on his jumping suit.
– That was a miscalculation, Villumstad explained to Viaplay.
German Pius Paschke won two of the first four events in this season’s opening. So far, only Germany and Austria have reached the podium.
The next World Cup round will take place in Poland's Wisła next weekend, where large hill competitions will be held twice.
