PZN Reacts to Kamil Stoch’s Exclusion – Brief Reaction

Kamil Stoch was not called up to join the Polish national team for the upcoming World Championships in Trondheim. After the World Cup events in Sapporo, coach Thomas Thurnbichler made his selection for what is considered the most important event of the season. The final team comprised Paweł Wąsek, Piotr Żyła, Dawid Kubacki, Aleksander Zniszczoł, and Jakub Wolny – notably excluding the three-time Olympic champion, Kamil Stoch.

PZN board member Rafał Kot responded to the decision. In an interview with Interia, he explained that Thurnbichler had full discretion, and that all selection rules were clear and followed strictly according to his own criteria. Kot noted that the coach maintained a ranking table of results which everyone, including Kamil Stoch, had agreed to. Since Stoch did not meet the required standards based on recent individual performances, he did not feature in the team.

Thurnbichler further clarified that the team selection was based on the World Cup ranking and the best individual result during the season. Although Stoch showed some improvement in Sapporo, other athletes performed better overall in the season’s standings. For instance, Piotr Żyła, who is the defending champion on the small hill, secured his position in the team on that basis.

The World Championships in classic ski jumping are scheduled to take place from February 26 to March 9 in Trondheim, Norway. The men’s ski jumping competition is planned from March 1 to March 8.
