Polish Ski Jumpers Await Verdict from Thomas Thurnbichler: Possible Changes

Originally published in Przegląd Sportowy on December 16, 2024

The form of the Polish ski jumping team is starting to diverge. There is a clear improvement in Jakub Wolny’s performance, and Aleksander Zniszczoł is regularly scoring points. However, all can count on a secure future in the World Cup. Whether Thomas Thurnbichler will take Dawid Kubacki and Kamil Stoch to the next competition in Engelberg will depend on a special test. Kacper Merk from Eurosport announced the date when everything will be clarified.

The mood among Polish ski jumping fans is mixed. Nothing, however, can overshadow the outstanding jumps from Jakub Wolny. The 29-year-old had the best performance of the season, considering the results of the Polish team, with jumps of 138.5 and 140.5 meters giving him eighth place in Titisee-Neustadt. A day earlier, Zniszczoł secured ninth place with two jumps of 135 meters, marking his highest of the season. These are the only pieces of good news.

The biggest concern remains the form of Dawid Kubacki. Currently, with 49 points in the overall standings, he occupies 26th place, and his recent outings have been disappointing. In the last two German competitions, he failed to score a single point, finishing 37th and 41st in the first rounds. No breakthrough has been noticed in any of his training or qualifying jumps.

Kubacki has now missed the cut in four consecutive events, suggesting that this 34-year-old might leave the team for the World Cup. Mediocre results are not yet sufficient reason for the coach of the White and Reds to remove him from the competition with the elite. However, it appears that Kubacki has one last chance. "In the middle of the week, the team will have a training session in Wisła; after that, a decision regarding any changes in the lineup for Engelberg will be made," said Thurnbichler on Eurosport, as revealed by Kacper Merk on X.

Therefore, we must still wait for potential reshuffles. Some fans view this decision as another lifeline for Kubacki. It's uncertain whether Kamil Stoch is a sure bet for Engelberg, but his results can be considered... stable. His jumps in Titisee-Neustadt placed him consistently in the same position in the World Cup standings. "The jumper locked in his third '10' in Titisee-Neustadt," noted TVP Sport journalist Mateusz Leleń.

Paweł Wąsek should also get another chance in upcoming contests, even despite a recent setback. He finished in 36th place after one of the weakest jumps of the weekend. "At the take-off, it didn’t seem to me that it was any different than before. But suddenly, my ski faltered as I reached the gate, which threw me off balance," he evaluated in front of Europsport’s cameras.
