Polish Ski Jumper a Surprise of the Season? "He is on a Completely Different Level"
In anticipation of the new World Cup season in ski jumping, the mood in the Polish national team is decidedly optimistic. Coach Thomas Thurnbichler discussed the trust he has developed with his jumpers. The Austrian has taken full responsibility for the physical preparation of his athletes. Training intensity during the fall was reduced to prevent player fatigue while focusing on efficiency and recovery.
Thomas Thurnbichler praised the promising progression of Paweł Wąsek, indicating that he has become a serious contender this season. “Paweł is on a completely different level than last year: mentally, physically, technically. He jumps really well, which has naturally boosted his confidence. He has the capabilities to achieve good results,” Thurnbichler assessed.
Despite the spotlight on Wąsek, the most famous Polish ski jumpers are still Kamil Stoch, Dawid Kubacki, and Piotr Żyła. Last season, Aleksander Zniszczoł surprisingly surpassed all three. However, this season could unveil further surprises. Thurnbichler has expressed optimism regarding Wąsek's form after winning the Summer Grand Prix.
Thurnbichler also commented on Kamil Stoch's choice to work with his own coaching team led by Michal Doleżal. “They have full freedom. It wouldn't be fair to intervene if Kamil wanted to follow his own path,” he said.
Looking ahead, Thurnbichler mentioned new, stricter regulations concerning suits in ski jumping. He noted that the first competitions will reveal whether the gear is adequately prepared. The introduction of technology like chips in suits presents challenges for all teams.
The first individual competitions will take place in Lillehammer, with the first on Saturday and the second on Sunday, both scheduled to start at 16:00. Prior to these, a mixed team competition will occur on Friday at 16:15.
