Poles Missed Their Chance: This Could Have Been Their Best Competition of the Season

The Austrians have no rivals in the Nations Cup. After Saturday's competition in Engelberg, the gap between them and second-placed Germans is 588 points. The Norwegians hold third place with 1169 points. The Polish team remains the sixth strongest in the standings.

Unfortunately, in Engelberg, the wind was a key factor in determining positions in the standings, leading to adjustments for unfavorable wind conditions. In the first round, some jumpers painfully realized this.

The first round was won by Daniel Tschofenig (142.5 m), who finished third in training from a lowered takeoff point. Jan Hoerl (142 m) secured second place, having won the training session, while Karl Geiger (134.5 m) came in third. In an exciting finish, Jan Hoerl jumped 138.5 m and ultimately triumphed in the competition. Tschofenig, with a jump of 135.5 m, took second, and Gregor Deschwanden (138.5 m) finished third.

None of the Polish jumpers finished in the top ten, although they had at least two significant opportunities. Right behind, in 11th place was Paweł Wąsek, who spoiled his jump in the second round, Aleksander Zniszczoł was 17th, and Kamil Stoch followed closely behind. Jakub Wolny did not qualify for the second round, and Piotr Żyła, who could have scored well, was disqualified for an illegal suit.

These results kept the Poles in sixth place in the Nations Cup rankings. The Austrians are far ahead with a massive lead, followed by Germans and Norwegians.

Nations Cup rankings after Saturday's competition in Engelberg: 1. Austria — 2451 pts 2. Germany — 1863 pts 3. Norway — 1169 pts 4. Slovenia — 601 pts 5. Switzerland — 556 pts 6. Poland — 548 pts 7. Japan — 470 pts 8. Finland — 167 pts
