Piotr Żyła's Impressive Comeback: A Stunning Jump and Leading Position
Originally published in Przegląd Sportowy on December 06, 2024
A remarkable signal from Piotr Żyła! The 37-year-old, returning to competition after surgery, excelled in the qualifications for the competition in Wisła. He soared up to 130 meters, leading the standings ahead of almost 50 rivals before ultimately finishing seventh. Far less optimistic were the attempts of the other Polish competitors, although seven of them will appear in the competition. Kacper Juroszek was disqualified.
In the first training session ahead of the qualifications, Paweł Wąsek performed well, placing ninth, while Aleksander Zniszczoł came in 12th during the second training session. The other Polish jumpers maintained the level we have become accustomed to this season and last. A total of 67 competitors were entered on the starting list. Thanks to their role as hosts, Poland was able to field up to nine competitors. The eyes of spectators were largely focused on Piotr Żyła. The three-time world champion had missed the first two weekends of the World Cup, returning to form after an injury.
In the qualifications, Żyła showcased his skills exceptionally well, executing a jump of 130 meters and leading for a considerable time. He was eventually surpassed by Ren Nikaido, who jumped with the 52nd starting number. The closest of the Polish competitors was Kacper Juroszek, who jumped 107.5 meters but was disqualified for an illegal suit. Andrzej Stękała also struggled with his jump (111 m). Despite struggling in the training sessions, Maciej Kot achieved his best mark in the qualifiers with 121.5 meters.
Jakub Wolny, who had already competed in the World Cup this season, jumped 117.5 meters. Kamil Stoch, consistently jumping well in training, had a weaker attempt this time, reaching only 114.5 meters. Dawid Kubacki showed better form, landing at a consistent 120 meters.
The results of the Poles in the qualifications for the World Cup competition in Wisła include: - 7. Piotr Żyła (130 m) - 18. Dawid Kubacki (120 m) - 26. Aleksander Zniszczoł (112 m) - 30. Kamil Stoch (114.5 m) - 34. Maciej Kot (121.5 m) - 35. Paweł Wąsek (110.5 m) - 41. Jakub Wolny (117.5 m) - 54. Andrzej Stękała (111 m) - Kacper Juroszek DSQ
