Piotr Żyła could have recorded his best jump of the season, but instead... he was disqualified! Was it his fault? Thomas Thurnbichler does not hide that jumpers' suits are checked daily and he does not understand what the problem was. Jakub Kot in the Eurosport studio explained directly that it is often simply a matter of luck.
Piotr Żyła finished the Engelberg competition with a disqualification for an illegal suit. - I cannot explain this. We check suits daily, did not see any problem today, so I am curious about what happened — said Thomas Thurnbichler. - The whole issue is that the controller measures it and takes it with a meter however they like. Everyone can measure something different. It depends on how the meter is held, how the material stretches — explained Jakub Kot.
Piotr Żyła could have achieved the best result of the season. “It was perfect for the Four Hills Tournament.”
The disqualification cost him a spot in the finals. In the second series, the 37-year-old jumped 137 m and was in the top ranks. Nonetheless, the disqualification for an illegal suit ruined everything. Jakub Kot stated that this is not necessarily only the fault of the jumper. Often... it is a matter of luck.
- If you have a proper suit, you have no chance to compete with the best. Remember Halvor Egner Granerud’s suit in Rasnov when he was the leader of the World Cup? His then coach said they take that risk, they will continue to do it, because otherwise the rest will leave them behind. You need a bit of luck in this — explained the former jumper, now an expert.
Thomas Thurnbichler commented on the disqualification, also expressing that such a decision from the controllers simply vexed him.
- I cannot explain this. We check suits daily, did not see any issue today, so I am curious what happened. Was it Piotr's fault? I don't think so. It’s the belly circumference, so a lot can happen throughout the day, but in the end, it's just a shame; I'm somewhat angry about this disqualification. Despite it, it was a very good day for him. You can see he jumps with a lot of confidence. He lands excellently, has no issues with the telemark. We see a lot of positives to carry into the next competitions — the coach remarked passionately.
Piotr Żyła could have recorded not only a successful jump but also a return to form just in time for the Tournament of Four Hills.
