Impossible mission for Dawid Kubacki

Polish ski jumpers are eager for high placements in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The qualifications have determined the matchups for the New Year's competition of the Four Hills Tournament where some Polish competitors will be favorites.

A particularly exciting rivalry is set between Dawid Kubacki and Michael Hayböck. While this would have been a hot matchup not long ago, Kubacki's current form presents an extremely tough task. The second TCS competition will traditionally take place on January 1 at 14:00.

In Oberstdorf, the Polish team was not in a favorable position and faced difficulties in their pairings. Only Paweł Wąsek and Jakub Wolny advanced to the second round as lucky losers.

It's important to note that during the Four Hills Tournament, the qualifications hold even more significance, identifying matchups in a knockout format. Twenty-five pairs determine participants for the second round, with an additional five slots reserved for the best scores among those who lost in their pairings.

Polish rivals in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

For the second German venue, we hoped to see a markedly better performance from the Polish team. To achieve this, they needed a solid showing in qualifications. In Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Paweł Wąsek proved to be the best performer among the Poles (130.5 m, 18th position) and will face Naoki Nakamura on New Year's.

Dawid Kubacki, however, finds himself in a completely different situation. With a jump of 123 meters, he ended up in 48th spot, meaning he will face a serious opponent in Michael Hayböck. While Kubacki would normally be favored in previous seasons, his current condition may make competing against the Austrian an impossible mission.

Fans from the Vistula region will also closely observe the 'Polish' matchup, where Jakub Wolny will go up against Piotr Żyła. Following recent jumps, the veteran is expected to have the upper hand, as is Aleksander Zniszczoł, despite having to contend with a home crowd against Felix Hoffmann.

Jan Hoerl topped the qualifications with a leap of 137.5 meters and will contend with the last qualified Felix Trunz from Switzerland in his pairing.

Polish pairings in Garmisch-Partenkirchen: * Naoki Nakamura — Paweł Wąsek * Jakub Wolny — Piotr Żyła * Felix Hoffmann — Aleksander Zniszczoł * Dawid Kubacki — Michael Hayböck.
