Major Changes in Ski Jumping: Tensions Rise in Germany
Originally published in Przegląd Sportowy on November 20, 2024
Ski jumping is facing a real revolution as significant changes are implemented by the FIS. These changes have become a hot topic among athletes, with many, including Markus Eisenbichler and Karl Geiger, expressing their frustration. Eisenbichler stated, "I think it's total nonsense what FIS has come up with again. I can no longer keep silent, as I am losing patience." Geiger echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that ski jumping should reward distance and technique, not unnecessary regulations made in isolation.
On the other hand, Andreas Wellinger supports the changes, explaining that the restructuring will better honor excellence and penalize mistakes more effectively. The first competition of the season is scheduled for November 22nd in Lillehammer, where these new rules will be put to the test.
From the upcoming season, there will be limits on the number of suits that competitors may use, which will now include a special chip for monitoring. Additionally, changing suits between series will no longer be allowed. The new rules regarding landing scores, which increase the penalty for poor landings from two to three points, have also raised eyebrows within the community.
These changes come as the season is set to begin, stirring both excitement and dissent among athletes as they prepare to adapt to the evolving landscape of ski jumping.
