Beloved Coach Alexander Stöckl Bids Farewell After Turmoil

The Norwegian Ski Federation and renowned coaching figure Alexander Stöckl are officially parting ways following a lengthy dispute. The Austrian coach has now made the decision to close this chapter of his career and focus on new opportunities.

Speaking to the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet, Stöckl reflected on his nearly 30 years in coaching, stating, "I think this is it. At least, as a coach of a national team."

This past May, Stöckl and the Norwegian Ski Federation reached a mutual agreement to terminate his contract amid a highly publicized conflict, sparked by criticisms from Norwegian ski jumpers about Stöckl's leadership. The athletes penned an open letter voicing their dissatisfaction and called for his dismissal. Stöckl, however, denied these allegations and even contemplated legal action before both parties settled on ending the contract.

A New Direction: Stöckl Joins the Polish Federation

Stöckl's tenure with Norway saw remarkable success over his 13 years as coach, culminating in six Olympic medals and twelve World Championship medals for Norwegian athletes.

Despite the turmoil, he is not stepping away from the sport entirely. For the upcoming season, Stöckl will take on the role of Technical Director for the Polish Ski Federation, where he plans to concentrate on long-term strategic development rather than daily training routines.

"I felt no urge to intervene and wave the flag myself," Stöckl remarked about his new position, adding that he does not currently miss the coaching role. He views this change as a positive step in his career.

While he has not completely dismissed the possibility of returning to coaching, he mentioned with a hint of hope, "Maybe I will train young athletes someday." It appears that the accomplished coach is not ready to completely step away from the ski jumping world just yet.
