Gregor Schlierenzauer, one of the most celebrated names in ski jumping, has embarked on a new life chapter after retiring from competitive ski jumping. In an exclusive interview with Przegląd Sportowy Onet, the Austrian talk about his struggles with mental health, the pressure of having to mature quickly, and the deep-rooted feelings that led him to quietly end his career.
He recalls moments when he felt his heart and mind were worn out by the relentless demands of the sport. Schlierenzauer highlights that even during his final days of competition—citing his own experiences as well as drawing parallels with the current challenges faced by Kamil Stoch—athletes often find it difficult to adapt to new techniques and equipment, especially when long-standing habits are at stake.
Since retiring, the legendary jumper has reinvented himself as a real estate agent. He explains that his passion for aesthetics, design, and architecture drove him to establish his own company, Impuls Living, where they tailor properties and interior designs to individual clients’ tastes while also supporting their overall wellbeing. The interview also touches upon his recent involvement in events like the Red Bull Skoki w Punkt in Zakopane, where he returns in a leadership role, demonstrating his undying connection with the sport despite having closed the chapter on his own competitive career.
Schlierenzauer reflects on the unique lessons learned during both his successful and challenging times, emphasizing that the hardships built his character more than his wins ever did. Ultimately, he expresses gratitude for his past and satisfaction with his current, pressure-free life, even remarking that he never entertained the idea of returning to ski jumping, despite witnessing record-breaking feats by others such as Ryoyu Kobayashi.
This candid discussion not only provides insights into the life of a sporting icon post-retirement but also serves as an inspiration for athletes transitioning into new careers after the end of their competitive days.
