Kamil Stoch is putting everything on the line. Ahead of the 2024/25 season, he has decided to work with his own coaching team. However, during the winter competitions, the three-time Olympic champion will not have free rein. This decision was enforced by Thomas Thurnbichler, who, according to TVP Sport, had the support of director Alexander Stoeckl. Stoch is set for a tense season that could end in disaster.

In June, Stoch announced his radical move to separate from the Polish team and pursue an individualized training regimen. A press conference in Szczawnica introduced the team including Michal Dolezal, Łukasz Kruczek, and physiotherapist Łukasz Gębala.

This shift stems from Stoch's results in the 2023/24 season, where he only made the top 30 in a few World Cup competitions, prompting thoughts of retirement. However, the two-time Crystal Globe winner stated he wants to fight for better results under his individually selected coaches, which created tension within the Polish team.

The coaching staff of Kamil Stoch will have to operate in the shadow of Thomas Thurnbichler. According to TVP Sport, there was even contention about who would signal Stoch's start with a flag, with the Polish Ski Association stating that Thomas will be in charge if Kamil is in the sample for the World Cup.

Thurnbichler expressed that he was not saddened by the news of Stoch preferring not to train under his guidance. He emphasized that the athlete's wellbeing and the team's success are paramount. The upcoming season appears to be demanding for Stoch, his coaching staff, and the Polish team since it's uncertain if all his personal staff will be able to remain with the 37-year-old veteran.

Additionally, the FIS is not obligated to grant accreditation to individual sub-teams within the same national team, complicating Stoch's plans. However, if he manages to match his past performance, these challenges may not hinder his journey.

The Winter World Cup in ski jumping is set to commence this weekend, with individual competitions being held in Lillehammer, Norway on Saturday and Sunday, along with a mixed event on Friday.
