Olympic Champion Takes His Final Bow

Ski jumping superstar Daniel-André Tande has announced his retirement from the sport, attributing his decision to the lasting effects of a severe injury sustained during a fall.

In an emotional video message, the 30-year-old Norwegian, who brought home Olympic gold for his country in Pyeongchang in 2018, revealed that he continues to grapple with the repercussions of his 2021 accident in Planica. "Jumping now brings me more fear than joy, and I have always believed that when it reaches this point, it’s time to say goodbye," Tande shared. The fall, which occurred during the FIS Ski Flying World Cup, resulted in him being placed in a medically induced coma.

A Legacy Defined by Greatness

Tande’s illustrious career includes numerous accolades, notably becoming the individual world champion in ski flying in 2018 at Oberstdorf, alongside securing three gold medals in team events. With an impressive tally of 13 World Cup victories, he took the ski jumping world by storm. However, fate dealt him a harsh blow during the prestigious 2016/17 Four Hills Tournament, where a binding malfunction on his right ski during the decisive jump cost him the overall title.

Though he may be stepping away from the competitive scene, Daniel-André Tande's contributions to ski jumping will not be forgotten. His legacy as an athlete who faced adversity with courage will continue to inspire future generations of skiers.
