Piotr Żyła is set to undergo knee surgery, a development that comes as a surprise from the Polish Ski Association. This weekend, the first summer ski jumping competition of the FIS Grand Prix will take place in Courchevel (August 10-11), but Żyła will not be part of the Polish team due to this necessary procedure for an ongoing knee issue.
Head coach Thomas Thurnbichler provided insight into the situation, stating that while the injury isn’t severe, the surgery is crucial to resolve a recurring problem with Żyła's meniscus. Fortunately, Żyła's physical and mental health is reportedly in good shape, and he is optimistic about the surgery, which is expected to help him train more comfortably as he prepares for the winter season. The recovery is projected to be swift, with a return to training possible within six weeks, during which he will focus on physiotherapy and strengthening exercises.
In the meantime, the Polish team competing in Courchevel will feature Dawid Kubacki, Aleksander Zniszczoł, and Paweł Wąsek. Rising stars Kacper Juroszek and Jakub Wolny will also join the squad following their impressive performances in recent training sessions. On the women's side, Pola Bełtowska and Anna Twardosz have been selected to represent Poland.
