Astronomical Earnings of the Ski Jumping World Cup Leader! Meanwhile, Poles Remain in the Shadows
Originally published in Przegląd Sportowy on December 01, 2024
Andreas Wellinger won the single round competition on Sunday in Ruka, outpacing Stefan Kraft and fellow German Karl Geiger. All three have enjoyed financial rewards from their results. However, the highest earners so far belong to another competitor, while the Polish jumpers remain behind in the rankings.
In conditions resembling a lottery, only one full round could be contested, with the second round canceled just before the Polish jumpers were set to compete. The best result for Poland was Dawid Kubacki, securing the 10th position.
Pius Paschke remains unmatched, earning 6,000 Swiss francs (about 27,000 PLN) from the Sunday's competition, increasing his total earnings to a remarkable 50,100 Swiss francs, or over 230,000 PLN. This stellar start to the season cements his status as an undisputed leader, both on the hill and in terms of prize money.
Polish Jumpers Far Behind in Rankings
Dawid Kubacki finished 10th in Sunday’s competition, earning 1,900 Swiss francs (about 8,600 PLN). His season total places him far down at 3,400 Swiss francs (around 15,500 PLN). Kamil Stoch finished just behind Kubacki in 14th place (1,500 CHF — 6,800 PLN), with Paweł Wąsek taking 15th (1,400 CHF — 6,300 PLN).
In total this season, Stoch and Wąsek have accumulative earnings of 3,300 and 5,700 Swiss francs respectively (approximately 15,180 and 26,000 PLN). By contrast, the leader Pius Paschke has nearly ten times more than all the Polish jumpers combined.
Increasing Earnings of the Top Athletes
Andreas Wellinger’s victory on Sunday netted him 10,000 Swiss francs (around 45,000 PLN), bringing his seasonal total to 31,450 Swiss francs (approximately 145,000 PLN). Second-place Stefan Kraft earned 6,000 francs (around 27,000 PLN), totaling 30,000 Swiss francs (around 138,000 PLN) for the season. Karl Geiger in third place added 4,500 Swiss francs (about 20,000 PLN) to reach a seasonal total of 12,600 francs (about 58,000 PLN).
Fans from Poland can only hope for better results in upcoming competitions. However, at this time, jumpers from Germany, Austria, and Norway dominate both on the hill and in the financial prize standings.
