It was not supposed to be like this! The Polish ski jumpers did not impress during the first training series in Oberstdorf. The best among them, Aleksander Zniszczoł, took 14th place in the standings, but the most worrying was the result of Dawid Kubacki. If it had been qualifying, he would barely have made it into the competition!

"The selection of Pawel Wasek, Aleksander Zniszczoł, Kuba Wolny, and Piotr Żyła was obvious. They can perform at a really high level. Kamil Stoch decided that he doesn't feel ready to compete in the Four Hills Tournament. After the holidays, he wants a training period. His return is open-ended; when he feels ready, we'll hold qualifications for the team and Kamil will be able to earn his spot in the World Cup," said Thomas Thurnbichler prior to the Four Hills Tournament. Polish fans hoped that such changes would lead to better results for the Poles in Oberstdorf and other TCS events.
The first indication of how the Polish team would perform in the Four Hills Tournament was supposed to be their performances on Saturday. That day, as a prelude to the excitement, training and qualifying for the Sunday competition were scheduled.
Vitalij Kalinczenko was the first on the jump, achieving 100 m, and it didn't take long for someone to outdo his result. Just the third jumper, Sakutaro Kobayashi, soared 17.5 m farther, and we had to wait until jumper number 26 for the first Polish athlete.
After Piotr Żyła took his turn on the ramp, Lovro Kos led the training with an impressive jump of 130 m. We hoped that under similar conditions, the Pole would perform a good jump, but he only reached 123.5 m, placing him sixth at that time.
Dawid Kubacki's attempt was even worse. He managed only 110 m and couldn't be satisfied with his performance. Moreover, he was only 24th with that result. Jakub Wolny performed slightly better at 113 m.
We therefore hoped for a stronger showing from our last two representatives. First up was Pawel Wasek, who reached 116 m, but Aleksander Zniszczoł showcased a much better performance! He landed at 126.5 m, placing him third, making him the best Polish jumper in this training series.
Ultimately, Zniszczoł ended up 14th in the first training series, while Jan Hoerl won, followed by Johann Andre Forfang and Daniel Tschofenig.
Results of Polish jumpers: - 14. Zniszczoł – 126.5 m - 31. Żyła – 123.5 m - 39. Wąsek – 116 m - 45. Wolny – 113 m - 50. Kubacki – 110 m
