Jenny Nowak achieved her best World Cup result recently in Schonach, Germany, and in this week’s episode of Tuesday Talk, we delve into her journey.
At just 22 years old, Nowak shares insights on her primary goal for the upcoming World Championships, the keys to the German team’s success, and what it feels like to be a trailblazer in the world of Nordic Combined.
You’ve kicked off the new season with two individual victories and an Overall Summer Grand Prix win. Have you had a chance to fully grasp these achievements?
"In a way, yes!" she laughs. "So much has happened so quickly, with a whirlwind of impressions and emotions. I’m doing my best to hold onto the positive feelings and self-confidence I gained throughout the Grand Prix. After a long time without such significant wins, I can definitely say I’m thrilled and enjoying every moment."
You’re already competing at an elite level on both the jumping hill and the cross-country course. Is there any specific area you wish to improve before winter fully sets in?
"Absolutely, there’s always room for improvement! My jumps have been good, but not yet at the level I aspire to reach. I still have work to do ahead of winter, particularly in refining my techniques in cross-country skiing."
Your best individual World Cup performance was a 2nd place finish in Schonach in 2023, where only Gyda Westvold Hansen surpassed you. Which competitors do you anticipate encountering this winter as you strive for your first World Cup victory?
"That’s a tough question! Many incredible athletes are competing at such a high level, so I expect an exciting winter ahead. To name just a few: the Norwegians Ida Hagen and Gyda Hansen, as well as my teammates Nathalie Armbruster and Lisa Hirner from Austria, Ema Volavsek, who finished 2nd Overall in the Summer Grand Prix, and of course, the strong Japanese competitors. There are so many talented skiers to consider!"
You and Nathalie Armbruster have both highlighted the strong internal dynamics of the German team during the Grand Prix. How crucial is it to have a supportive environment for success as an athlete?
"A strong team dynamic is vital—more important than many realize. My team feels like a second family, and we create a fun environment where we motivate each other to continuously improve. This camaraderie is reflected in our results, as evidenced by our dominance in the Grand Prix, winning the blue, red, and yellow bibs! Sharing victories and celebrations together brings an even greater joy."
This winter, all eyes are on the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Trondheim. In Planica last year, you secured silver with the Mixed Team. What are your goals heading into this championship?
"We have a formidable team, and our first goal is to qualify for the Mixed Team event. Of course, I’m aiming to win my first individual medal this year as well. Beyond that, I want to showcase my best performances at the World Championships."
With the large hill debut in Oberstdorf, women’s Nordic Combined has reached a significant milestone. What does it mean to you to be part of these historical moments and to help pave the way for future generations?
"It’s incredibly meaningful. I’m proud to have participated in every first event and new competition in women’s Nordic Combined. The ultimate dream now is to be represented at the Olympics. Even if I’m not able to compete myself, the thought of watching other girls participate there in the future excites me greatly."
Lastly, what makes the Nordic Combined community so distinct?
"It truly feels like one big family. We support each other, celebrate our victories collectively, and stand by one another through tough times. There’s never any negativity, and I feel lucky to be part of the NoCo family!"
