Therese Johaug started strong in the 50 km race in Lahti, quickly establishing a significant lead over her competitors. Despite Ebba Andersson trailing by nearly 25 seconds after just 9.5 kilometers, Johaug maintained her commanding position, ultimately winning the race by over a minute. "I had prepared really well and felt great today. I aimed for a fast pace and wanted to avenge my performance at the World Championships," Johaug said in an interview following her victory.
While Johaug delivered an extraordinary performance, Andersson acknowledged the challenge of competing with her. "She was incredibly strong today, and it's impressive to see the level she maintains," Andersson commented.
Johaug's decisive win, her last race in an international competition according to her pre-race statements, draws significant attention as the athlete hints at future plans. During the race, she distanced herself from her nearest competitors early on, with Öyre Slind securing a second-place finish and Andersson taking the third slot, over three minutes behind.
Johaug's remarkable career could close with this victory, raising questions about her future as she has not ruled out the possibility of competing again. "I will decide by Easter," she cryptically stated in an interview with SVT Sport.
Overall, the race also featured other notable results from Swedish skiers, with Emma Ribom finishing 11th and Moa Ilar 12th, while Maja Dahlqvist unfortunately had to withdraw about 15 kilometers into the race.
