A Game-Changer for Nordic Combined: Ski Flying Added to the World Cup
Originally published in Eurosport on October 01, 2024
The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) has made a groundbreaking announcement that is set to transform the landscape of Nordic combined skiing — ski flying is officially joining the World Cup roster. The inaugural competition will kick off in Kulm, Austria, in February 2026.
This landmark decision marks a monumental leap for the sport, as highlighted by race director Lasse Ottesen, who expressed his enthusiasm for this development. After years of planning and deliberation, this initiative aims to create opportunities for athletes, including the acclaimed Jarl Magnus Riiber, to showcase their talents on some of the biggest ski jumping hills in the world.
Riiber, known for his incredible skills in ski flying, notably recorded a remarkable 240-meter jump during a practice session at the Raw Air event in Vikersund last year. While Ottesen had hoped for an earlier implementation, he is now thrilled to confirm that the first ski flying competition will take place in Kulm in 2026.
