Nordic Combined: Severe Illness Forces Riiber to Retire

Jarl Magnus Riiber, the world’s leading Nordic combined athlete, has confirmed that he will be ending his career due to a serious health condition. In a hastily arranged press conference in Seefeld, Austria, the Norwegian sports icon disclosed that he has been diagnosed with Morbus Crohn, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that will affect him for the rest of his life.
Riiber, known as the benchmark in the sport with eight World Championship titles and five overall World Cup wins, described the toll the illness has taken on both his body and his personal life. He recounted numerous hospital stays, prolonged training setbacks, and the missed opportunities to spend time with his family. "I feel like a prisoner, and I no longer enjoy the sport," Riiber stated, emphasizing that although the medical support has been excellent, the physical toll and side effects of necessary medications leave him with a compromised immune system.
The decision to retire comes despite his continued dominance in the overall World Cup standings, where he currently leads ahead of competitors such as Vinzenz Geiger. Riiber explained that, although there is optimism regarding potential treatment, the long-term burden of the disease is too heavy to sustain his career, and he prefers to leave the sport while still at the top.
Riiber’s retirement marks the end of an era in Nordic combined. Although his career is decorated with remarkable successes—including 76 World Cup wins, a record beating Hannu Manninen's achievement—an Olympic gold has eluded him. With his final season underway, Riiber now looks forward to a future where he can focus on his health and enjoy time with his family.
As Nordic combined mourns the departure of one of its greatest, Riiber’s legacy will remain a high standard for future athletes in the sport.
