The 2024-25 men’s Viessmann FIS Nordic Combined season kicked off in Ruka (FIN) today, with two Provisional Competition Rounds (PCRs) held amidst wintry temperatures and light snowfall. The decision to organize two rounds was driven by an unfavorable weather forecast for the weekend, ensuring fair conditions for the athletes.

A total of 61 competitors from 13 nations took part, showcasing their skills on the HS 142 hill of the Rukatunturi Ski Jumping venue. The day’s action began with a training jump, followed by the highly anticipated PCRs.

Highlights from the First Provisional Competition Round

In the first PCR of the day, Austria’s Franz-Josef Rehrl delivered an impressive performance with a soaring jump of 140.5 meters, earning 144.7 points to claim the top spot. His outstanding effort secured him a provisional victory.

Close behind, Japan’s Ryota Yamamoto jumped 138 meters, amassing 138.5 points to take second place. Norway’s Espen Bjørnstad rounded out the top three with a jump of 132 meters and 129 points.

Should adverse weather disrupt Saturday’s schedule, this PCR will serve as the starting point for the Individual Gundersen 10 km race.

Dominant Display in the Second Provisional Competition Round

The second PCR saw Norwegian star Jarl Magnus Riiber live up to his reputation as the favorite. Riiber soared an incredible 144 meters, earning 150.9 points to secure a commanding victory.

Franz-Josef Rehrl, who led for much of the round, finished second with a strong jump of 143.5 meters and 143.4 points. Fellow Austrian Thomas Rettenegger impressed with a leap of 137.5 meters and 138.1 points, taking third place.

If Friday’s conditions prove unsuitable for competition, this second PCR will be used for the Individual Compact 7.5 km race.
