Nordic Combined: Soaring into a New Era
As the world of Nordic skiing continues to evolve, Nordic Combined is set to make historic strides for both men and women. Exciting new developments are on the horizon, introducing the debut of Ski Flying for men and large hill competitions for women, indicating a significant leap forward in the sport that underscores innovation and ambition.
Men’s Ski Flying World Cup: A New Beginning
In an unprecedented move, the Nordic Combined committee has officially announced the addition of Ski Flying to the men’s World Cup. The very first Nordic Combined Ski Flying World Cup will unfold in Kulm/Bad Mitterndorf, Austria, in February 2026. This milestone follows last season's formal integration of Ski Flying into the International Competition Rules and marks an exciting new chapter for the discipline.
Race Director Lasse Ottesen shared his enthusiasm for this groundbreaking event:
“Now with the first Nordic Combined Ski Flying event for the men, we are taking the next big step. I am very excited for this event.”
Women’s Large Hill World Cup Premiere
On the women's front, a momentous occasion is just around the corner. The 2024/25 season will witness the inaugural large hill World Cup competition for women, to be held at the iconic Holmenkollen in Oslo, Norway, on March 15, 2025. This groundbreaking event follows successful competitions during the Summer Grand Prix in Oberstdorf, Germany and Chaux-Neuve, France.
Ottesen praised the rapid development in the women’s category, stating,
“The development on the women’s side has been astonishing in recent years. This year’s test events in Oberstdorf and Chaux-Neuve showed just how well the athletes have adapted to the large hill format. We’re very much looking forward to the Holmenkollen events this winter.”
A Unified Vision for the Future
The upcoming premieres for both men’s Ski Flying and women’s large hill competitions embody a collective vision for the future of Nordic Combined. While these advancements come with their challenges, the backing from national federations in Norway and Austria has been instrumental in bringing these historic events to life.
As Nordic Combined continues to flourish, these landmark events are set not only to showcase the exceptional talent and competition among athletes but also highlight the sport's capacity to innovate and push boundaries. The countdown has begun for what promises to be an exhilarating new chapter in the saga of Nordic Combined.
