Nordic Ski World Championships 2025

At the World Championships in Trondheim, an unexpected victory was delivered in the women’s mass start event of Nordic combined. Japan’s Yuna Kasai captured the world title after posting a jump of 96.5 meters, edging out the dominant Norwegian favorite, Gyda Westvold Hansen, who had previously won multiple World Championship titles including individual and mixed team events in 2021 and 2023.

In a dramatic finale, Kasai’s decisive jump overturned Norway’s lead established after the 5 km cross-country run. German competitor Nathalie Armbruster, a strong contender who had led the overall World Cup with three individual wins, was in medal contention after the run but could only muster a jump that left her in sixth place. Team mate Jenny Nowak, who had a solid jump of 95 meters, finished narrowly in fifth. Other athletes such as Marte Leinan Lund and overall World Cup leader Ida Marie Hagen also featured in the race, the latter suffering a fall on the final ascent that cost her valuable seconds.

In the menacing and unpredictable atmosphere of international competition, the Japanese performance proved that even the favorites can be challenged. Adding to the drama, Kasai’s sister Haruka Kasai contributed by improving from sixth in the run to a bronze medal finish after her jump. Up-and-coming junior Trine Göpfert, fresh from a successful junior World Championship, finished 17th, emphasizing that the future of the sport is already taking shape.
