Originally published in krone.at on February 26, 2025
Claus Tuchscherer was once one of the most promising athletes in the Nordic combined discipline. Originally competing for East Germany, he was later part of the ÖSV team and entered the Nordic World Championships in 1978 as a favorite for the gold medal. However, during the competition in Lathi his binding unexpectedly failed – a horror fall which has never been fully explained and has even raised suspicions of sabotage.
Over the years, Tuchscherer’s dramatic career has been marked by this controversial incident. Once labeled a traitor after his escape from the DDR, he has lived a tumultuous life both on and off the slopes. On his 70th birthday, in an in-depth interview with Krone, he recounted the events of that fateful day and opened up about the challenges he faced throughout his sporting career.
The incident remains a topic of intrigue in the history of Nordic skiing, and Tuchscherer’s story is a reminder of the dramatic and sometimes mysterious nature of elite winter sports.
