At the Nordic Ski World Championships in Trondheim, the battle for sprint glory delivered some dramatic moments on Thursday. In the men’s skating sprint, top favorite Johannes Hösflot Kläbo from Norway proved unbeatable, clocking a time of 2:45.74 minutes to take gold. His performance was in stark contrast to the mishaps seen in the quarterfinals, where Austria’s Benjamin Moser fell and finished 28th, dashing his hopes of advancing further.

In the women’s sprint in the skating style, Swedish skier Jonna Sundling secured her first gold medal at the championships with a finishing time of 3:03.36 minutes. She was followed by Norway’s Kristine Stavaas Skistad and Switzerland’s Nadine Fähndrich, who completed the podium. Sundling, making an impressive debut with a fourth-place finish in her heat, expressed satisfaction with achieving a top-20 ranking in her first world championship appearance.

The event, held in front of a packed Granåsen Ski Center, also saw other athletes struggle. For instance, Magdalena Scherz, also from Austria, finished in 20th place in her debut, and further disappointments were noted for other competitors such as Michael Föttinger and Lukas Mrkonjic, who missed out during qualifying. Additionally, two leading Scandinavian contenders were forced to withdraw due to injuries—Swedish Linn Svahn and Norwegian Erik Valnes, the latter sidelined by a back injury.

Overall, the races in Trondheim showcased both remarkable achievements and unexpected setbacks. Kläbo’s flawless sprint and Sundling’s breakthrough have set the tone for the remainder of the championships, promising more high-level competition in the coming events.
