Challenges of Change: A Cross-Country Skiing Star's Experience

Swedish cross-country skiing sensation Linn Svahn is set to work with her third ski technician in just as many years as she tackles the upcoming season. This change is part of a larger trend affecting many of Sweden's top athletes on the World Cup circuit, who are grappling with instability within their waxing teams.

“It’s always tough when your wax technician leaves. Especially now, having my third in three years makes it even harder. Adjusting and getting in sync with a new technician takes time,” reflects Svahn, who has consistently ranked among the world's elite skiers.

Last week, Anders Svanebo, the waxing manager for Sweden's national cross-country team, introduced a revamped team that includes four new faces. Previously, Svahn and fellow athlete Frida Karlsson were supported by personal wax technicians Mats Eklund and Larry Poromaa over the last two seasons, but Mattias Berglund will now join the lineup.

Notably absent from this year's team is the experienced Perry Olsson, who has previously worked with Norwegian skiing legends Marit Bjørgen and Petter Northug. Olsson played a crucial role in preparing Jonna Sundling's skis in recent seasons. “He was a vital part of my success, contributing in ways that no one else has before,” Sundling expressed, now turning to Karl Edenroth for her ski preparations.

The Swedish waxing camp has not been without its share of controversies. In recent years, conflicts have brewed between athletes and their waxing technicians, particularly when the skis fail to perform as anticipated.
