Weak snow conditions in Finland this winter have resulted in the cancellation of numerous ski competitions. The lack of snow, combined with warmer weather, has posed challenges for race organizers. In Rovaniemi, the Jätkänkynttilä Ski Marathon had to relocate its finish area to the Ounasvaara Ski Stadium due to insufficient snow cover, marking a first in the event's history. Organizers noted that normally, they would be able to utilize natural snow accumulated during the winter, but this year has been different.
The Finnish Ski Association has remarked that the number of competition cancellations so far has not been unusual compared to past winters. Many ski events have been postponed or had their race routes modified this season. The Skate Marathon was a particular event affected, requiring significant shifts in logistics due to the adverse weather conditions.
Overall, despite some disruptions, organizers have managed to hold many national competitions this season without major incidents. Given the challenges posed by the current weather patterns, adjustments are anticipated for future events to ensure the safety of participants.
