In Vuokatti, Finland, a groundbreaking initiative is set to transform ski maintenance practices, aiming to elevate the performance of Finnish athletes on the world stage. This project emerges in response to the recent ban on fluorinated waxes, seeking to deliver a competitive edge through state-of-the-art maintenance techniques for skis.

Launched by Jyväskylä University in conjunction with the municipality of Sotkamo, the project receives substantial support from the Finnish Ski Association and the Olympic Committee, with a total funding of 850,000 euros. The focus is on developing innovative ski base patterns and advanced waxing methods to enhance performance tailored to various snow conditions.

Olli Ohtonen, the development manager at the Sports Technology Unit of Jyväskylä University, underscores the increasing importance of ski maintenance techniques as countries establish their own specialized systems. Currently, the project is rigorously testing different ski base patterns under real-world conditions, with the aim of integrating these enhanced practices into athletes' standard gear.

Recently, successful tests have been conducted in Vuokatti, capitalizing on the area's ample snow cover for effective performance evaluations. The ultimate goal is to roll out these cutting-edge techniques during prestigious events, including the upcoming Olympics in Val di Fiemme, ensuring that Finnish athletes are thoroughly prepared and equipped to compete at the highest level.
