VM comet's brutal downturn: 'There was too much of everything'

Anne Kjersti Kalvå (33) burst onto the scene last year with a stunning performance, clinching two medals at the World Championships. However, the following season has proven to be a harsh reality check.

Kalvå acknowledges the toll that the expectations of her newfound success took on her. After her remarkable achievements, she failed to prioritize rest and instead pushed herself further, leading to burnout.

She stated, "Last year was all about wanting 'more' all the time - becoming better, faster, and doing things better than before. But it became too much of everything."

As the new competitive season kicks off, Kalvå emphasizes her commitment to pacing herself, aiming to avoid the mistakes of the past. "This year, I try to be patient, taking one step at a time instead of charging headlong from the start. The balance is difficult to maintain; you want to improve everywhere, but if you push too fast, you end up going back a step or two. So it’s all about being patient this time."

To help guide her through this season, Kalvå has enlisted the expertise of former champion Marit Bjørgen. Known for her extensive experience and calm demeanor, Bjørgen will be a crucial asset in navigating the mental challenges that come with high-level competition. "Having Marit on the team has been incredible. She reassures us and emphasizes that believing in ourselves and doing what’s best will lead to positive outcomes," Kalvå noted.

As Kalvå gears up for what could be a pivotal year in her career, she remains focused on learning and growing from her past experiences while striving for success at the World Championships on home soil in Trondheim.
