Therese Johaug's Dominance Astonishes Norwegian Ski Gurus: "She Looks Scary Good"
Therese Johaug showcased her impressive form during the season opener of the ski competition in Beitostølen, Norway, where she emerged victorious in the 10-kilometer classic race.
At the age of 36 and having returned to competition last year after a two-year hiatus, Johaug clocked a time of 26 minutes and 32 seconds. Her closest rival, Heidi Weng, finished a significant 39 seconds behind, while Kristin Fosnæs came in third, over a minute after Johaug.
Initially, Johaug was not the fastest at the 1.3-kilometer checkpoint, but she accelerated and consistently posted the best times thereafter. This performance left Nordic skiing analysts and commentators astounded.
Commentator Martin Johnsrud Sundby exclaimed, "She looks scary good," highlighting the strength of Johaug's performance. Another commentator, Jann Post, remarked on the impact Johaug's dominance might have on her competitors, particularly noting the staggering disparity as Anne Kjersti Kalvå trailed Johaug by 54 seconds at the 6.3-kilometer mark, stating, "This is a knockout from Johaug."
Johaug, who had previously hinted at her strong condition by winning the 30-kilometer race at the Norwegian Championships last spring, aims for the World Championships at home in Trondheim. Despite the demanding training schedule as a mother of a small child, she remains focused on her objectives. "I'm a bit frustrated, but overall, I know my body well enough to push through this challenging time," Johaug expressed.
She has set her sights on the 50-kilometer event at the World Championships, which will be featured at a significant competition level for women for the first time. Johaug is perceived as a favorite for this event, showcasing her incredible comeback and unyielding determination.
