Therese Johaug, who retired from racing after the 2023 World Championships, received a surprising announcement from NRK's long-time expert during the final day of the men's 50km race. The announcement was regarding a new women’s event set for the 2025 World Championships, which she had not anticipated.

Johaug exclaimed, "Oh wow, a 50km?" as Torgeir Bjørn described plans for the event. The idea of returning to competition prompted Johaug to consider re-entering the sport, expressing a deep desire to participate in a women's 50km race, something she had dreamed of since her retirement.

During the last World Cup season, Johaug noticed that despite being on the sidelines, she remained active, preparing vigorously during the Planica championships.

Johaug's past performances have set high expectations, as she had achieved stellar results prior to retirement, including victories in various competitions. As she trains for this upcoming event, there is excitement and anticipation around her potential return.

Johaug's participation could not only be significant personally but also historic for women’s long-distance skiing in the World Championships.

With the 2025 event on the horizon, all eyes will be on Johaug to see if she can reclaim her place among the elite competitors in this prestigious category.
