Johaug stated that it is very unlikely she will continue another season.
"It takes a lot for me to embark on a new season. I feel this was my last year," Johaug told NRK.
She competed as planned in what may be her final race and did not achieve her hoped for outcome.
“I believe this was it,” the star athlete asserted.
Continuing, she expressed her uncertainty about competing at Lahti next weekend.
"I’m done, I think. The only thing that bothers me is the 50 km in Trondheim," she noted, indicating a feeling of having done enough in the sport after a lackluster finish.
Johaug went on to explain that there was a family discussion during dinner the night before, where opinions were clearly divided regarding her career's next steps. Most supported her retirement choice, while her sister opposed it.
“I am likely more negative about continuing. But most of the family is in favor of me going on,” she admitted with a laugh.
She also recognized the intensity of emotions associated with possibly leaving racing behind.
"I thought about this yesterday, and I definitely feel differently now than in 2022 when I was uncertain about retiring. Now I see that life has more to offer, with my family and other things in everyday life."
After competing in a world cup race in Holmenkollen, Johaug expressed that the likelihood of it being her last race is high, reflecting a sentiment she shared thoroughly during her time in Holmenkollen. She noted how the race felt different this time around, more as a closure than an endeavor to continue seeking victory.
In her last performance, Johaug struggled on the course, where Swedish athletes dominated, leading to discussions about whether her equipment was sufficient to compete at high levels.
Johaug is confident that she will not step back for Lahti and sees this event in Holmenkollen as a full circle in her career.
Reflecting on her past and discussing her future choices with her family, she continues to weigh options amidst ongoing life changes.
