Norwegian skier Therese Johaug has voiced her discontent regarding the schedule for the upcoming World Ski Championships, particularly concerning the timing of the 50 km race, set for March 9. This date coincides with International Women's Day, a day when there will be no female events taking place. Instead, men will dominate the competition with the 50 km race alongside events in ski jumping and combined skiing on that day.
In a recent interview with NRK, Johaug questioned why women are not competing on this important date, saying, "What on earth happened? I thought the 50 kilometers would be held on Women's Day. How much better would that be?" She believes the competition organizers should have rearranged the schedule to allow women to race on March 8.
The Championships are set to run from February 26 to March 9, with the women's 50 km event serving as the final competition. Johaug argues that this scheduling oversight neglects an opportunity to elevate visibility for female athletes.
In defense of the decision, Åge Skinstad, head of the organizing committee, explained that arranging consecutive competitions for male skiers is more straightforward due to a greater number of specialists in various distances. He added that the 50 km race for women will still occur on a noteworthy day, ensuring a festive atmosphere while honoring women's rights.
This year's race will also be significant, as it marks the first time women will compete for a 50 km title at the World Championships, paving the way for a historic moment in the sport.
