Ruka | Swedish stars Frida Karlsson and Jonna Sundling have reacted strongly to the consequences of the fluor ban in cross-country skiing, stating that the need for precise ski waxing has become even more crucial than before.

According to the top Swedish competitors, the margins for error are smaller than ever. A minor mistake in the wax room can derail an entire race.

"It can make such a big difference that it's frightening," said Jonna Sundling.

Frida Karlsson added, "If you mess up the waxing, you are out of luck."

The total ban on fluor products, implemented ahead of last season, was described as the biggest upheaval in the sport's history by Mats Eklund, the fluor coordinator at Sweden's Ski Federation.

Karlsson and Sundling feel that their struggles reflect the tough competition they faced last season, indicating that athletes could be performing at their peak physically but still finish behind if they don’t get the right wax.

"You could end up 16th on a day where you might have won if you had the competitive edge under your feet," Karlsson noted, emphasizing how pivotal waxing has become.

The changes have also impacted the biathlon community, especially in warm weather conditions where the snow is softer.

The upcoming World Cup is set to start this weekend in both cross-country and biathlon, with events taking place in Finland - cross-country in Ruka and biathlon in Kontiolahti.
