Sweden Welcomes the Chance to Host More World Cup Events After Nove Mesto Cancellation

The cancellation of World Cup events in Nove Mesto due to financial difficulties has left a void in the competition calendar, raising questions about a potential replacement location. In response, the Swedish Ski Association has expressed a willingness to host additional events in Sweden. Lars Öberg, the head of cross-country skiing, has voiced enthusiasm about expanding the number of World Cup races in the country. Currently, only one event is scheduled in Sweden this season, a drop from the three held last year.

Öberg pointed out that a key factor in Sweden’s eagerness to host more competitions is the desire to minimize travel and associated costs, as well as to adopt more environmentally sustainable practices. While the possibility is enticing, he declined to comment on specific arrangements, citing that the situation is still developing. At present, the World Cup event originally slated for January 31 to February 2 in Nove Mesto has not yet been reassigned.

Sweden has a rich history of hosting competitions in venues such as Falun, Gällivare, Östersund, and Ulricehamn. The season kicked off this year in Ruka, Finland, on November 29.
