Five athletes from the Steamboat Springs High School Nordic ski team have already qualified for the state championship just one event into the season.
The five — Dixie Barnes, Evie Fisher, Emi Goldsmith, Lucy Capra, and Charlie Wiedel — all finished in the top-40 of the the 5-kilometer classic race in Aspen on Friday.
“What a great kickoff race we had to the Nordic season,” head coach Katie Lindquist said in a statement. “For some, it was a kick in the butt, for others it was the boost needed to reflect hard training and pay off.”
Wiedel took third overall in the boys race, crossing the finish line in 17 minutes, 35 seconds.
“It was fun watching him challenge for the top three positions in his field, finishing third on the day,” Lindquist said. “(He has) some places to be hungry for as the season progresses.”
Top finishes for the girls included Barnes and Fisher, who each finished in the top-20 of their race.
Next up for the Nordic team is a race at Spring Gulch in Carbondale on Wednesday.
