The Steamboat Springs High School Nordic ski team took on its second race of the season Wednesday and earned a handful of new state qualifiers.
Head coach Katie Lindquist said the sunshine and fast snow made for a perfect day of racing on the Spring Gulch course, hosted by Eagle Valley. The course begins with a steady climb, eventually leading to serpentine descents and a fast finish suited for technical skiers.
Leading the charge for the Sailors was Dixie Barnes and Colin Clark, taking third in the girls race and fourth in boys, respectively.
Barnes and the girls managed to take third place overall as a team in the 13-team event, with five racers finishing in the top 30. The boys placed sixth.
New state qualifiers include Novella Light and Emma Broyles for the girls as well as Clark and Erik Yeiser for the boys.
Lindquist says the teams will get more than a week of training on snow before another skate race at Snow Mountain Ranch hosted by Middle Park on Saturday, Jan. 25.
