Ski Queen Johaug Returns to Competition - Petter Northug Comments on High Expectations

Therese Johaug, known as the ski queen in cross-country skiing, is making her return to competition at Beitostølen with a 10 km traditional race following a two-year hiatus.

At 36 years old, Johaug has a remarkable career, boasting four Olympic gold medals and 14 World Championship titles. She has been away from competitions since March 2022, and Northug has expressed high expectations for her performance.

"Therese is the favorite based on what we have seen. She won a test race on roller skis, and the terrain in Beitostølen suits her. She seems well-balanced and fit. I believe she is as strong as ever," stated multi-event winner Petter Northug earlier this week.

Despite the outside pressures, Johaug maintains a positive attitude. "I understand there are expectations. I've performed at a high level before, and my goal is not to compete for fifth or tenth place in the World Cup this season, so those expectations don’t bother me," she commented.

However, she also recognizes the challenge ahead: "I have been away for two years. While I was previously participating in regular test races, it has been a considerable time since my last 10 km race. To be completely honest, I am not at the same level I was before."

Following Beitostølen, Johaug plans to compete in two distances at the World Cup opener in Ruka next weekend.
