Reijo Jylhä has taken over the coaching of the Finnish women's national cross-country ski team starting May 1. This announcement came from the Finnish Ski Federation on Wednesday. Jylhä replaces Ville Maunuksela, who stepped down last week.
Jylhä’s contract is for one year. He previously served as the head coach of the national cross-country ski team during two different spells, from 2001 to 2006 and again from 2014 to 2018.
Teemu Pasanen continues as the head coach of the men's national team, working alongside sprint coach Ville Oksanen.
"Reijo brings valuable experience to the coaching team, and I believe he is the right person to help create a new approach and culture in the women's national team at the elite level," said Pasanen.
Pasanen noted that he and Jylhä have previously collaborated for four years, during the latter’s last stint, which will certainly contribute to a smooth working relationship moving forward.
Jylhä aims to maximize the potential of athletes and the coaching staff despite the financial challenges faced by the federation. He believes that with the right methods, collaboration, and culture, success is achievable, regardless of financial limitations.
Key focuses include developing the surrounding support systems and organization in line with the federation's forthcoming strategy to leverage existing expertise to its fullest potential.
